  The Season So Far

Woking got off to a bad start, losing four of their first five games. The season hasn't been too successful since, even after bringing back Geoff Chapple as Manager.

Back in November The Cards came to Underhill and were sent packing after a 3-0 victory for the Bees with goals from Arber, Strevens and Purser.

Scoring isn't too much of a problem, they've scored one more than the Bees, but defensively they're not so hot. This shows in two recent games, both lost 3-4, at home to Forest Green Rovers and away to Margate.

Last Saturday they drew 1-1 at home with leigh RMI and on Bank Holiday Monday another draw was played out at Hereford United. This time ending 2-2.

In February they went up to Stevenage and came away with all the points after beating them 3-0 and Doncaster Rovers lost 3-1 at the Kingfield Stadium a few weeks ago.

With the shine going off Barnets performances, only two points from the last four games, it's anyones guess how this one will go. But with Woking in need of some points to avoid the drop the bees are going to have their work cut out.

Updated 05/04/02

Peter Shreeves will be without midfielder John Doolan for the trip to Woking. Former Everton player Doolan is still struggling with a neck injury, but he is also due to start a two-match ban for reaching 10 bookings. Greg Heald and Lee Gledhill are both included in the squad, but it is their last match before they start respective suspensions.

Geoff Chapple must prepare for Woking’s clash against Barnet without the services of Scott Steele. The experienced former Airdrie defender has yet to recover from a pelvic problem and could be out for a further two or three weeks. He will join Paul Steele on the treatment table, who is still a long-term casualty.

Did You Know?

Woking fielded two pairs of brothers when they lost their first round FA Cup game against Cambridge in the 1988/89 season.

History

Woking were founded in 1889 and played in the West Surrey League until they joined the Isthmian League in 1911.

They stayed there for 72 years, finishing runners-up in 1956/57.

1982/ 83 saw them relegated for the first time ever, followed in 84/85 down again into Division Two South. Geoff Chapple took over towards the end of that season but was unable to stop the drop.

They won promotion in 86/87 after just missing out the previous term, and won promotion back to the Isthmian Premier in 89/90.

Two more seasons follow and the Cards gain promotion to the Vauxhall Conference, ending twice as runners-up.

In Cup competitions Woking have been very successful. In 1958 they won the FA Amateur Cup at Wembley in front of 71,000 spectators. They beat Ilford 3-0.

They have won the FA Trophy three times in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

In the FA Cup they went toWest Bromwich Albion and won 4-2 back in 1990/91. This was followed by a fourth round defeat to Everton by 1-0.

They also beat the Bees two seasons running in 94/95 and 95/96. (Less said about that the better!)

1997 saw Geoff Chapple leave Woking for their neighbours and rivals Kingstonian, but has recently returned to hopefully (after saturday) bring back the glory to the Surry side.
