| The
Season So Far Please forgive us for starting off with the info from our Preview from when we last met at Chrsitmas. Scarborough's season started off with three 1-1 draws, the third away to Barnet in front of 1276 fans. They then lost 0-1 to Margate at home before their first win of the season, away to Woking 2-1. That remains their only away win of the season, going on to draw five others, losing the remaining five, the heaviest being 0-6 at Hereford and 2-4 at Dagenham & Redbridge. At home they havn't had much luck either, only beating Chester(2-1) and Farnborough(1-0). With three draws the other six were lost, 2-5 being the worst to Leigh RMI. Currently lying second from bottom of the Conference it has not been looking good for the Seadogs. However, since beating us 3-0 on 28 December, their form has been good and they have won three of their last four games, drawing last Saturday against Margate away. This also includes their third round FA Trophy match against Hednesford, beating them 2-0 at home. Recent injuries include Scott Jordan, Marcus Jones and their goalkeeper, Andy Woods who played against Woking two week ago after having pain-killing injections in his foot. A player who may be making his debut is loanee, Neil Mann, from Hull City. He was supposed to start on New Years Day, but had a hamstring injury. Recent goalscorers for Scarborough include, Sheppherd, Shields, Rose (these three scored against us at Chrsitmas), Connell, Stamp, Pounder, Dryden and Windross. In our previous preview, we reported that Scarborough had had three points re-instated that had been docked for fielding an ineligble player. It transpires that the penalty was (presumably) not imposed while an appeal was heard. The good news for Scarborough is that the penalty has been reduced to one point, with an undisclosed fine. Their chairman, Malcolm Reynolds is now confident that they can get out of the bottom three. Their manager, Russell Slade has recently gone down as saying " I don't look at the table to be honest." He followed this a couple of weeks later with, "The table doesnt lie and we are still at the bottom of it. Last Six (including Boxing Day) All games Home Away Scarborough will be without two key players for the long trip south to face Barnet in the FA Umbro Trophy. Marcus Jones (knee) and Danny Brunton (leg) are definitely ruled out while Dean Shield is very doubtful after receiving intensive treatment by the club physio this week for a thigh injury. After both sides failed to put a goal past each other, we face each other again on Tuesday, 5 February. As usual, the BFCSA will run a coach to this game. The coach will leave at two o'clock, and involves a five hour journey so have a word with your boss, get the afternoon off and don't miss what promises to be one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Did You Know? Following last week's rather lame amazing fact about Farnborough (I'll try to find something a bit more amazing in time for the rescheduled match), I'm afraid it does not get much better... Scarborough set a record in the 1990/91 season for having the lowest ever Fourth Division attendance - 625 against Wrexham on 7 December. The club blamed this on bad weather. And to make up for last week's lemon, here is an amazing fact number two: As a non-League club (first time around), Scarborough beat the following Football League clubs in the FA cup: Bradford City, Crewe (twice), Darlington, Lincoln, Oldham, Preston, Rochdale, Stockport and York. If anyone can confirm whether Peter Shilton played for Scarborough in the 1987/88 season, then I can tell you something even more breathtakingly stupendous, but the flippin' book doesn't say - even though there's supposed to be something about them on that page... History Scarborough FC was founded in 1879 by members of the Cricket Club and played it's matches at the North Marine Cricket ground. In 1887 they moved next door to a site called the recreation Ground. In the 1898/99 season they joined the Northern League Division 2 where they ended the first season 8th out of ten. They moved again to land owned by the local corporation in Seamer Road, with work starting on the ground in 1898. In February 1926 the club were fined £25.00 by the FA for making illegal payments to players. The commitee was also banned for three years. The new commitee decided to go professional and they joined the Yorkshire League playing their first match in August 1926. After the War they played in the Scarborough and District league, then joined the Midland League the next season. They played in the Northern Premier League from 69 to 79 coming forth in the 69/70 season, only two points off the winners. They also won the FA Trophy in 72/73, 75/76 and 76/77. Scarborough went on to play in the Conference and were the fisrt team to win automatic promotion in 1986/87, with Barnet finishing a close second. Their stay in the Football League was not to be a long one and in 1999 they were relegated back to the Conference, thier highest ever finish being 5th in Division 4 in 1988/89. In their first season back in the Conference they finished 4th, then 10th last season. With things the way they are at the moment it shows how quickly a team can plummet once league status has been lost! |
