| The
Season So Far Scarborough's season started off with three 1-1 draws, the third away to Barnet in front of 1276 fans. They then lost 0-1 to Margate at home before their first win of the season, away to Woking 2-1. That remains their only away win of the season, going on to draw five others, losing the remaining five, the heaviest being 0-6 at Hereford and 2-4 at Dagenham & Redbridge. At home they havn't had much luck either, only beating Chester(2-1) and Farnborough(1-0). With three draws the other six were lost, 2-5 being the worst to Leigh RMI. Currently lying bottom of the Conference it's not looking good for the Seadogs. With their gates well down on last season, they could be the first club since automatic relegation from the Football League was introduced to go down again. On a brighter note (for Scarborough), they have settled out of court with Boston United over money owed on the transfer of defender Paul Ellender last season. Scarborough were ready to go to the High Court in Leeds to seek a winding-up order against the Conference leaders if their demands over £20,000 of unpaid instalments on the deal had not been met, but the matter has now been resolved between the two clubs. They have also had three points re-instated that were deducted for fielding an ineligble player. Meanwhile, Boro manager Russell Slade has added former Leeds United youngster Paul Shepherd to his squad. Shepherd, who made one Premiership appearance for Leeds, has joined the club on a non-contract basis following his release from Oldham Athletic. Barnet should win this one comfortably, but you never know where that banana skin may be hiding! (this was originally written before Boxing Day - let's hope that was the only banana skin...) What the papers say... The following is a preview from the Non-League Paper. Scarborough boss Russell Slade is looking to kick-start a push away from the foot of the Conference table when his side take on Barnet at the McCain Stadium. Scarborough have had a turbulent year during which they have been beset by financial troubles and poor form but Slade is hoping that 2002 can bring them better fortune. He said: "The results since I arrived could have been better but when you are down there at the bottom other factors come into play like anxiety - and the luck doesn't go for you." Slade will go into the match still without striker Darryn Stamp who is struggling with a hamstring injury while there are also doubts over recent signing from Oldham, Paul Shepherd, and loan player Dene Shields. The squad has been boosted by the arrival of striker Karl Rose, who made his debut for the club in the 4-3 Boxing Day defeat against Doncaster and Slade admits he has high hopes for his latest acquisition, who has joined from Rochdale. He said: "He has good pedigree, good strength and that little bit of know-how so he is an excellent addition to the squad." Barnet boss John Still will be looking for his side to get back to winning ways. The Bees faltered with a 3-0 defeat against Stevenage Borough on Boxing Day and Still knows that they must take three points from their trip to the coast if they are to stay in promotion contention. Defender Lee Flynn is expected to miss out again after failing to shake off an ankle injury and Robbie Sawyers will drop back from midfield to cover. Neil Midgley could be in line to be promoted from the bench if Still chooses to reshuffle and rest some of his side after the hectic festive schedule. Last Six (including Boxing Day) All games Home Away History Scarborough FC was founded in 1879 by members of the Cricket Club and played it's matches at the North Marine Cricket ground. In 1887 they moved next door to a site called the recreation Ground. In the 1898/99 season they joined the Northern League Division 2 where they ended the first season 8th out of ten. They moved again to land owned by the local corporation in Seamer Road, with work starting on the ground in 1898. In February 1926 the club were fined £25.00 by the FA for making illegal payments to players. The commitee was also banned for three years. The new commitee decided to go professional and they joined the Yorkshire League playing their first match in August 1926. After the War they played in the Scarborough and District league, then joined the Midland League the next season. They played in the Northern Premier League from 69 to 79 coming forth in the 69/70 season, only two points off the winners. They also won the FA Trophy in 72/73, 75/76 and 76/77. Scarborough went on to play in the Conference and were the fisrt team to win automatic promotion in 1986/87, with Barnet finishing a close second. Their stay in the Football League was not to be a long one and in 1999 they were relegated back to the Conference, thier highest ever finish being 5th in Division 4 in 1988/89. In their first season back in the Conference they finished 4th, then 10th last season. With things the way they are at the moment it shows how quickly a team can plummet once league status has been lost! |
