  The Season So Far

Until losing 0-1 on Saturday to Chesterfield, Reading had won seven games in succession. They had a good start to the season winning four and drawing one before losing to Cardiff 1-2 at home. Only two wins and two draws in the next six were followed by three consecutive defeats. Two more wins and one defeat preceded the previously mentioned run.

It should be a tough game for Barnet on Tuesday and depends on how far Reading want to get in this competition, but with the final in the near future they should send a first team to Underhill. Hopefully, with Barnet riding high at the moment and only losing two games in the last ten (both 0-1) it should be a tight game, possibly going to extra-time or even penalties. So get practising Lads!!

History

Reading F.C. was founded in 1871 but didn't play in a league until 1894 when they were founder members of the Southern League. They turned professional the following year and after playing at various sites settled at Elm Park in 1896.

As with other Southern League clubs they formed Division Three in 1920/21, winning the south section in 1925/26.

The following season they reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, their best ever run, losing to Cardiff City (0-3) who went on to win it.

In 1931 they were relegated back to Division Three (south) where they remained until 1957/58 when the League became nation-wide.

Unfortunately in their centenary year they went down to Division Four until 1975/76 when they won promotion, but only for a year.

1978/79 brought promotion again, but after relegation in 1982/83 they nearly merged with Oxford United, but luckily for everyone concerned this fell through.

Promotion in 83/84 and again in 85 /86 found Reading back in division Two. This was to last only two seasons, but during this time they won the Simod Cup at Wembley, beating Luton Town 4-1.

John Madejski became Chairman in 1990 and Reading's fortunes took an upward turn. They were Division Two Champions (old division three) in 1993/94. Success in Division One came quickly and they reached Wembley in the play-off final, losing a thrilling match against Bolton Wanderers 3-4. Ironically they were the first team to finish second and not get promoted automatically.

1997/98 saw Reading finishing bottom of Division One, with our old friend Terry Bullivant being replaced as Manager towards the end.

They moved from Elm Park to the Magnificent Madejski Stadium for the following season, finishing tenth. After a poor start to the next season, another old friend of ours, Alan Pardew, took over as Manager.

They have since played in another play-off final, this time at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. Yet again it was not to be and they lost to Walsall 3-2 in extra-time.
