Conference Press Release

15 March 2002

barnet

Barnet manager Peter Shreeves welcomes back striker Austin Berkley into his squad for the trip to Southport. The Bees boss is also hoping midfielder Danny Brown can shake off a minor injury he picked up in training to figure in the game. Defender Rob Sawyers and Ben Strevens are definitely out.

boston united

Boston have been dealt a double blow as they prepare to take on Telford with the news brothers Simon and Ross Weatherstone (knee) are likely to miss out. Striker Peter Costello is also doubtful after suffering a knock, although defender Andy Lodge is expected to be fit for the York Street clash.

chester city

Chester City’s loan signing Chris Tate is pleased to be in the thick of the action following his move to the Deva Stadium. The former Halifax striker, borrowed from Third Division Leyton Orient, was frustrated at being on the sidelines at Brisbane Road and is relishing his chance to shine.

dagenham & redbridge

Dagenham and Redbridge’s march towards the Football League continued as the Nationwide Conference leaders overcame a stubborn Stevenage Borough side to win 3-1 courtesy of a Mark Stein hat-trick. The ex-Chelsea forward is the Conference’s leading scorer so far this season with 20 goals already.

doncaster rovers

Doncaster boss Dave Penney has just one injury concern for his side’s trip to face Conference strugglers Woking. Midfielder Gareth Owen sustained a foot injury against Boston and is rated doubtful. Penney said: “We know it’s going to be tough against Woking because they are battling for their lives.”

dover athletic

New Dover boss Clive Walker will be without two players for his side’s clash with Hereford. Striker Matt Carruthers is still ser ving a three-match ban while Leon Kelly is also suspended. Dover slipped to a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Boston on Saturday but they will be looking to give Walker a winning start.

farnborough town

Farnborough are lobbying their local council in an effort to find a new home that is up to Football League standard. Their Cherrywood Road ground is deemed unsuitable for expansion, given its location and facilities, and they still need to provide 250 seats with back supports by the end of May to comply with Conference standards.

forest green rovers

Forest Green boss Nigel Spink is without three suspended players as he prepares his team for their home clash with Leigh RMI. Striker Carl Heggs is ruled out of the visit of The Railwaymen as he starts a two-match ban. Matthew Coupe and Stephen Jenkins are also ruled out as they complete suspensions.

hayes

Hayes boss Terry Brown is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the crunch relegation clash with Scarborough. Brown refuses to reveal his transfer target but is hopeful of wrapping up a deal before the six-pointer against the Seadogs. He said: “It’s the biggest game of our season. It’s massive for us.”

hereford united

Hereford chairman Graham Turner has issued his side with a relegation warning as they prepare to face rock-bottom Dover. Hereford’s form has taken a turn for the worse with four straight defeats and Turner said: “If the players don’t recognise the dangers, they shouldn’t be playing football. We’ve got to sort it out quickly.”

leigh rmi

Leigh boss Steve Waywell is sweating on the fitness of four players ahead of the trip to Forest Green. Dave Ridings (hamstring) should make it but Gerry Harrison (calf), Dino Maamria (groin) and Tony Black (stomach strain) are all doubts. Waywell said: “It’s a big game for both teams.”

margate

Margate manager Chris Kinnear faces an injury crisis as his side prepare to face Morecambe in the FA Trophy quarter-final. Gary Blackford (hamstring) definitely misses out while Charlie Mitten (hip), Graham Porter (head), Lee Williams (hamstring), Phil Collins (ankle) and Leon Braithwaite (thigh) are all major doubts.

morecambe

Morecambe will take time off from the Conference this weekend to continue their FA Trophy campaign. Jim Harvey’s men eased into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 home win over Scarborough. They should fancy their chances of progressing further by overcoming Margate, having already beaten the Kent club 2-1 in the Conference.

northwich victoria

Northwich face Yeovil on Saturday in the FA Trophy sixth round hoping to continue their impressive form in the competition. The Vics beat Boston 3-1 in January before winning 4-0 at Vauxhall and 3-2 against Telford in Februar y to help earn player-boss Jimmy Quinn the Conference manager-of-the-month award.

nuneaton borough

Nuneaton’s next game is against title seeking Boston United at York Street but manager Steve Burr is tipping Dagenham & Redbridge to be promoted to the Football League. He said: “Dagenham have that edge to win the title. They have the points in the bag and the best two strikers in the Conference.”

scarborough

Scarborough boss Russell Slade faces a striker crisis and could be without four key players for the trip to take on fellow strugglers Hayes. On-loan Oldham striker Paul Shepherd (dislocating shoulder), Mark Patterson (banned), Marcus Jones (knee) and Darren Stamp (groin) are doubts.

southport

Southport must look to bounce back from last week’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Northwich without the suspended Steve Whitehall. Boss Phil Wilson is without his striker as he starts the first of a three-match suspension, while defender Carl MacAuley is also sidelined with a calf problem.

stalybridge celtic

Stalybridge have signed Rob Woodhead after he was released by Premiership Blackburn. The 19-year-old has received forms making him eligible for the Conference but the FA have refused him permission to play in the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, Stalybridge’s first appearance in the last eight.

stevenage borough

Stevenage manager Wayne Turner has challenged the players “to give themselves a chance to be in my plans next season”. The former Peterborough assistant coach, who replaced Paul Fairclough at Broadhall Way, says he has seen “some positive signs but will have to weigh up the positives with the negatives”.

telford united

Telford boss Jake King faces an injury nightmare ahead of their difficult trip to title-chasers Boston. King held a training session towards the end of the week where he had just nine fit players. But he has been boosted by the news Jake Edwards is expected to be available for the next match at Barnet.

woking

Woking should have Jamie Pitman available for the visit of Doncaster. The midfielder is set for a place on the bench on his return after surger y on his heel. Manager Geoff Chapple will definitely be without defender Rob Hollingdale, who has not featured since last month’s 2-0 defeat at Southport.

yeovil town

Yeovil, though they look to have fallen short of the Conference title again, have another chance to claim some silverware in the FA Trophy. The Glovers are two games away from the final having accounted for Canvey Island with a 2-1 win in the last round. They face a tricky tie away to Northwich Victoria on Saturday.
