05 April 2002

Below is the weekly Press Release from the Conference League

barnet

Peter Shreeves will be without midfielder John Doolan for the trip to Woking. Former Everton player Doolan is still struggling with a neck injury, but he is also due to start a two-match ban for reaching 10 bookings. Greg Heald and Lee Gledhill are both included in the squad, but it is their last match before they start respective suspensions.

boston united

Steve Evans claims his dismissal from the dugout in Boston’s dramatic 3-2 win against Southport was a case of mistaken identity. He said: “I was sent from the touchline for comments that I never made. The fourth official came and had words with someone on the bench and I was adjudged to have said something I didn’t."

chester city

Mark Wright is set to pick his starting line-up for the trip to Forest Green from a similar squad to the one that held Yeovil on Monday. Wright could be without midfielder Shaun Carey as his side desperately chase the points that would move them clear of the drop zone. Former Norwich player Carey is still struggling with a groin strain.

dagenham & redbridge

Garry Hill hopes to pick his starting line-up to face Northwich from the same squad on duty for the 3-2 win over Morecambe on Monday. “We’ve no big problems,” said Hill. “Whatever team we put out, we go out and try to do the job. Northwich blow hot and cold, but they’re very difficult to beat on their own ground.”

doncaster rovers

David Penney will again be without his entire first-choice midfield for the visit of Hereford. Francis Tierney (ankle ligaments), Jimmy Kelly (foot), Gareth Owen (ankle) and Jamie Paterson (knee) were all injured in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Chester. The quartet are joined on the sidelines by suspended pair Ben Futcher and Justin Jackson.

dover athletic

New boss Clive Walker must do without striker Leon Kelly for the visit of Leigh. Kelly limped out of Monday’s 3-1 win at Stevenage with a back problem and he has not yet fully recovered. Midfielder Jamie Day is also sidelined as he sits out the first of a three-match suspension, but Jimmy Strouts returns from a ban.

farnborough town

Graham Westley was delighted to see his Farnborough side score 17 goals in four games, following their 4-1 win over Northwich. The recent run of form has seen Farnborough storm into the top five and Westley said: “The players seem to have found a new standard over the last few weeks where they have remembered those winning habits.”

forest green rovers

Nigel Spink has no new injury or suspension worries ahead of the visit of Chester. Forest Green will be without long-term injury victims Nathan Lightbody, who sustained a double leg fracture at the end of January, and midfielder Mark Shaw, who badly damaged knee ligaments against Yeovil earlier this year.

hayes

Manager Willy Wordsworth welcomes back Matt Gray to the squad as Hayes prepare for their crunch relegation clash with fellow strugglers Stalybridge. Centre-half Gray has been sidelined for three months due to knee ligament damage, but he is available again should Wordsworth wish to tinker with his starting line-up.

hereford united

Steve Piearce, Ian Wright and Ian Rogerson will all be absent again when Hereford travel to Belle Vue to take on Doncaster. Striker Piearce has been out for a fortnight with a damaged ankle, while defender Wright misses out due to a calf injury. Midfielder Rogerson is struggling with a hamstring problem.

leigh rmi

Leading goalscorer Dino Maamria misses out as Leigh make the trip to Dover. Maamria has completed a three-match suspension, but is now struggling with a groin injury. Boss Steve Waywell is also without Jamie Udall, who damaged knee ligaments against Scarborough on Monday, Gerry Harrison (ankle ligaments) and Tony Black (knee).

margate

Chris Kinnear has Nick Roddis and Akpo Sodje returning to his squad for the trip to Nuneaton after back injuries. But Kinnear will be without a quartet of regular first-teamers as striker Phil Collins (Achilles), goalkeeper Charlie Mitten (thigh), defender Simon Beard (foot) and Dean Yorath (ankle) are all ruled out.

morecambe

Jim Harvey has admitted he would have preferred to have played the away leg first in the FA Umbro Trophy semi-final against Stevenage. Morecambe face their Conference rivals with the first leg at Christie Park. But Harvey is set to be without the services of top scorer Robbie Talbot for the game. Harvey said: “Robbie is really suffering from his foot injury. ”

northwich victoria

Val Owen and Mark Devlin are sidelined as Northwich prepare for the visit of title-chasing Dagenham. Owen completes a three-match suspension, while fellow midfielder Devlin is very doubtful due to a knee injury. But on the plus side for boss Jimmy Quinn, defender Denny Ingram is available for selection again.

nuneaton borough

Manager Steve Burr has no new major injury worries ahead of the visit of Margate. “We’ve got a few knocks, bumps and bruises to check on, but apart from our long-term injuries I’m hoping we’ll be okay,” said Burr. But Nuneaton will be without striker Jason Harrison and defender Warren Peyton through suspension.

scarborough

Russell Slade could have Darren Stamp back in the team for the visit of Telford to the McCain Stadium. The former Halifax forward is available again after suspension, but Slade will check on the fitness of Steve Baker, who has a virus, before naming his starting XI. Gareth Stoker and Richard Tracey are both out with ankle problems.

southport

Phil Wilson is hoping to sign on-loan midfielder Chris Ward on a permanent basis. The 20-year-old, who began his career at Lancaster City, is currently on loan from Birmingham City until the end of the season. Ward is in his second season at St Andrews but has yet to make a first-team appearance.

stalybridge celtic

Lottery winner David Miller is hoping some of his luck rubs off on his players as Stalybridge embark on two crucial matches in their bid to escape the drop. Miller must do without Kevin Parr through suspension for the must-win clash at relegation rivals Hayes so Steve Wood will be called into the starting line-up.

stevenage borough

Stevenage have outlined plans to move towards being a more full-time club next season. The younger members of the squad will train every day with manager Wayne Turner, while the more experienced players will continue on a part-time basis. Chairman Phil Wallace said: “It is an innovative compromise between one-to-one training and coping financially in the Conference.”

telford united

Manager Jake King is hoping Jim Bentley will have recovered from injury in time for Telford’s trip to Scarborough. But Gary Martindale is out with a swollen knee, Steve Palmer is not yet ready for first-team action and Mark Albrighton is serving the final game of a five-match suspension.

woking

Geoff Chapple must prepare for Woking’s clash against Barnet without the services of Scott Steele. The experienced former Airdrie defender has yet to recover from a pelvic problem and could be out for a further two or three weeks. He will join Paul Steele on the treatment table, who is still a long-term casualty.

yeovil town

Gary Johnson has warned his side to be wary of UniBond League leaders Burton, their opponents in the FA Umbro Trophy semi-final. He said: “Burton are a strong side and we’ve got to respect them. They have beaten Conference sides along the way in this competition - Farnborough, Chester and Woking.”
