| By Alex One of the less heralded activities of the supporters association is the phenomenal success of our football quiz team. This year John Erroll, Dave Bown, Peter Croft, Richard Horrigan, Fred Stiff, and Steve Percy will attempt to defend their title as Home Counties champions for a fourth successive year. Normally I just ask the questions and dodge hilarious quips about my accent, but on Sunday 23 September I achieved a hastily arranged promotion as I accompanied Mr. Bown and Mr. Eroll to Granadaland to record two editions of 'Do I Not Know That', the quiz show which goes out each weekday on ITV Sport (formally On Digital). If you haven't seen this quality programme, its hosted by Simon O'Brien, former Brookside heart-throb and ex-presenter of 'Standing Room Only'. Our first opponents were Darlington and Mansfield, who were despatched after a nervy start. I was waiting for that elusive question on the chart position of Jo Boxers 1983 smash hit 'Just Got Lucky'. That sadly never came, but I just about avoided total embarrassment, as Rude Kid effortlessly answered questions under the spotlight on our Conference winning season. We watched the recording of another show involving opponents from our group. By now my colleagues were rocking, and our winning total of 45 points against teams from Wolves and Brentford was, apparently the highest hitherto registered in the forty odd programmes recorded. John and Dave answered probing questions in realistic post-match interviews. When these shows are broadcast look out for the 'ringers' who posed as 'Barnet substitutes' in the stands. I will retire when we qualify for the later rounds, but intend to start during a further bunch of recorded shows held in Manchester in the New Year. So look out for the shows - half the questions are on Barnet after all. If you want to be really sad and follow our progress, there is an updated website on ITV Sport. (Group I...) As for our regular quiz team, you're welcome to cheer them on at the Queens Arms. The first home games are in November. (Exact dates and times to be confirmed.) |
