Dick
Rolfe Unplugs His Microphone
"The Tony
Blackburn of the Hill" Dick Rolfe, who has been part
of the Underhill matchday experience in the tannoy box
for over 30 years, has decided unplug his mike and
retire.
Dick, who started following the
Bee in the 1950s was last year presented with the Barnet
Football Club Supporters Association Lester Finch Award.
Until the existing Tannoy box was built Dick used to play
records before the game and read out the half times from
a dusty room that now is the Ladies Toilet under the main
stand.
He said
"Saturday's game against Bury was my last in the
tannoy room, I'm hanging up the mike to watch the Bees
from the terraces. In the thirty odd years I was in the
box I had the privilege and pleasure to meet, and work
with, some really nice people from all parts of the
football world, refs., scouts, players, press, players,
stewards, police and of course supporters. Thanks to the
guys I've shared the box with, Geoff Richards, Dave Best,
Craig (Hospital Radio Man) Saul, Dean Martin and first
reserve Reckless, thanks for your help, your patience and
most of all, your friendship. To have been awarded the
Lester Finch Award last season from the BFCSA was a great
honour and was like the cherry on top of the cream cake
only second to shaking the hands of God himself, Sir
Nicky Evans. I look forward to joining you all on the
terraces and cheering on the Bees".
