BFCSA Programme Notes
Notts County, 29 August 2009

Alex Jones

NOTTS COUNTY

When a certain director of football was appointed last month at Meadow Lane, the team of Jimmy Sirrell experienced an unprecedented amount of publicity. None of this can be bad for League 2 is my opinion, but with this comes a certain amount of expectation. Happily for Notts County fans they have hit the ground running, but now they find themselves in the unaccustomed position of being the team that everybody wants to beat, and the constant subject of transfer gossip, real and imaginary. In the League Barnet have managed to beat the Magpies on only one occasion, that being in 2006, when both goals were scored by our leader Ian Hendon. We did triumph in the Autoglass though up in Nottingham.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

When technology failed us against Watford and some of my notes disappeared into the ether, some of you did not get to read the full details. The main accolade went to John O’Flynn. Goal of the season was one by the long departed Ashley Carew for his speculative and spectacular strike in the opening home game of last season against Chesterfield. Nicky Deverdics was judged the most improved player that night and Albert Amoah the Young Player of the Season. Today sees a special presentation of the Lester Finch award to Dick Rolfe, which I mistakenly advertised in the Shrewsbury programme. We delayed the presentation so that new BFCSA chairman Eddie Thompson could return from his travels. Our veteran voice of the terraces was honoured for his special contribution to the club over the years.

DAY TRIPPER

International weekend sees us play on a Friday night up in Sixfields, the stadium Barnet opened in the first competitive fixture. The coach to Northampton will leave the Odeon at 5.0pm, and the price for this fixture is £20, or else £15 for concessions. There follows a Saturday fixture on September 12th against Macclesfield which necessitates a 9.30am start and will cost £30 or £25. As with all fixtures you need to be a BFCSA member to travel, but you are welcome to sign up on the day. That will cost £10 adults or else £5 for over 60s or under 16s. The travel line is 01707 647365 but please specify which of the trips you are interested in. You can also see Steve Percy to book. Swansea’s equivalent to Steve is an Italian gentleman named Ugo who has his own hut outside the Liberty Stadium [a far superior structure to the originally titled Cardiff City Stadium]. Involved in their opening game was our old friend Mark Gower, who has never scored in a competitive game for the Swans. Then he netted four times in pre season including a hat trick, but was once again frustrated in that opening game v Middlesbrough, and missed the penalty that would have beaten Reading.

LONDON’S PRIDE

Just occasionally the BFCSA win small victories for the fans in our discussions with the club. So it is that prices of London Pride and Magners in the Pavilion have been reviewed and have both gone down by 80p. Several fans had earlier talked to Committee members or e-mailed us on info@bfcsa.co.uk and you are welcome to do the same, if you have any issues or comments. If you would rather put pen to paper contact us at 63 Western Way Barnet EN5 2BU. This address is also the contact if you wish to join the Association or sign up to the Beehive fund, of which more in the Millwall notes. It is also threatened that there will be photos of the Committee members in the programme very soon.

SUPPORTERS TEAM

With sad inevitability no sooner did I mention a possible clash between Team FCBFCSA and Shrewsbury Town, and then this game had to be postponed. There are no scheduled games as I write, but please talk to the gaffer John Hunt for confirmation, and he is still on the look for potential sponsors and opponents. Or if you are interested in past exploits and thorough profiles of team members consult the website http://www.fcbfcsa.co.uk

WEBSITE

Although I missed our first victory of the season against Morecambe I was able to rush to http://bfcsa.co.uk the following morning. There I was reassured by statsmeister John Snow that Ahmed Deen had made his Barnet debut, that Paul Furlong had scored his tenth goal for the club, and that Joe Tabiri was making his season debut. John is still on the look out for those willing to write match reports.

IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD

There have been some problems with people trying to get live match Barnet World match commentary. The club are working hard to solve this, but in the mean time Barry Swain has put together a step-by step guide to help people. Sometimes, Barry points out that the fault lies with individual computers. Both the club website and the Association one have a detailed and thorough set of instructions. If you are still experiencing problems send an e-mail to the commentary team at barnetplayer@live.co.uk

DEVON

If you missed the excellent victory Torquay, you may have still seen the celebrations of the Adomah goal by people in Morph suits of varying flattering appropriateness. Not a good look. Scooby Doo and the Pink Panther were also walking around to the amusement and bafflement of many. Anyway, despite the various fashion faux pas, which made the people I saw celebrating the Ashes victory the following day at the Oval seem subdued in comparison , the vocal support undoubtedly helped lift our young side. Now we can make some noise in a good way this afternoon also.

Good luck to the Bees.
