Coca Cola League Two By Lisa van der Wekken Barnet goes to the top of the table after a one-nil victory over Macclesfield yesterday in a less than memorable 90 minutes of play. Bees' fans were as vocal as ever, especially the east terrace, but it didn't seem to do much for the home side in the opening minutes. The ball meandered through our side more often than not, but despite that Macc never really initiated any convincing opportunities. The sun came out from behind a cloud in the twenty-fifth minute, and the next minute Nicky Bailey had put one in off a pass by Grazioli. The Macc defender was closed down quickly as our midfielder drove the ball in low past keeper Adam Fettis. From then on the Bees were the stronger side. A couple of good chances by Graham and Grazioli were swept convincingly aside by the keeper. Macclesfield had but one more go in the first courtesy of Paul Harsley but it ended up right in Scott Tynan's lap. Second Half Things got off to a better start for the Bees in the second. A yellow card to Macc about 15 minutes in meant Richard Graham received a free kick from the corner and the start of an impressive round of saves by Fettis. Ben Strevens' ascending shot halfway through the second should have blown in just under the crossbar but for a tip-over by the keeper. Dean Sinclair showed his mettle and his footwork throughout the half, creating some pomp but with no circumstance. At least twice his shots on goal veered just right of goal. Our defence was on form too, thanks in part to newcomer Adam Gross, sandwiching at least one Macc striker before he could get too close to the net. In contrast it was usually Fettis who kept it out for the opposition. Coherent play arrived a little too late in the second, Grazioli and Graham generating some exciting chances in the last five minutes of regular time. Two minutes of extra time ended with some frantic but unproductive play in front of our own net. It was a patchy game from start to finish, with no side really controlling for long or creating a series of exciting chances. More than one rogue ball spun up and over the stands in both halves perhaps hoping to avoid the midfield crush. But you can't argue with results, and again the Bees achieved them on Saturday. Quotes from the Manager "I'm delighted with the win. The most important thing is that result makes it our first clean sheet in the league. It's been a very good weekend for the club and the only thing in our way now is the transfer window because we are a very small squad. "We still haven't hit our ceiling yet. I'm just very proud of my players. They just continue to amaze me. "I think the first half was a bit sloppy from both teams. We allowed them too much space, but it was a great goal. "We should have scored three more goals in the second half, but I'm delighted we kept them Macclesfield out." "Some people thought we should strengthen after coming up but these lads did it for us last year and they're replicating it again this year." And a quote from Liam Hatch (on the new shirts, during the BBC London radio commentary): "Yeah, we're getting used to 'em - quite like 'em in fact - and they definitely look great with jeans!"
