Barnet Supporters v Farnborough Supporters 15 January 2005 By Gerald Currell Barnet continued their superb form under the guidance of Pierre as 3 second half goals saw the Bees come from behind to see off Farnborough by 3 goals to 2. Barnet dominated the first half but failed to breach a Farnborough defence that struggled to clear their lines. Craig C came closest to opening the scoring when he controlled neatly and fired a volley against the bar, but Dazza twice, Tezla, Squibbs and on 3 occasions Tony all had good chances to put Barnet in front after some neat passing football opened up the Farnborough defence time and again. Farnborough had barely managed to get into the Barnet half and it came as a shock when they took the lead. A mistake in the Barnet defence, that, up until this point had been expertly marshalled by Ollie and Dan let in Farnboroughs left winger and he squared it to Farney who calmly beat James from 8 yards. Barnet were stunned and lost their way slightly as the half wore on and at half time they slumped off 1-0 down having missed enough chances to have been comfortably in front. Second Half The second half started the same as the first with Barnet in the ascendancy. Dazza came closest to scoring the crucial equaliser when he twice cut in from the flank and fired wide from 20 yards.
The second goal wasn't long in coming, Craig bundling in after good work from the busy Dazza. And Craig was denied a hat trick when he beat the keeper to the ball and nodded goalwards. The ball was trickling over the line when Tony, under pressure from a chasing defender, helped the ball over the line only to be adjudged to have been offside. Despite this set back the result looked to have been put beyond doubt when Tony got on the end of yet another cross from Dazza and fired into the far corner from 10 yards out. With the game seemingly petering out and the boggy pitch taking it's toll on the players, Pierre made a flurry of substitutions bringing on Pete, Ian, Tom and Fred. This seemed to disrupt Barnets flow and Farnborough sensed a chance of an unlikely comeback. A long ball forward caught Barnets central defenders badly out of position leaving Ross isolated against the pacey forward who latched onto the long ball and finished passed the unworked James. This made the final few minutes a tense affair as Farnborough threw everyone forward in a desperate attempt to force an equaliser. This left them open at the back and Craig had a great chance to seal victory and complete his hat trick when Springer played him through the middle but when a chip over the stranded keeper looked the best option, the tiring Craig hesitated and the ball held up in the mud and allowed the Farnborough defence to recover. With time almost up, Farnborough almost earned the chance of an undeserved equliser when Fred made a last ditch challenge in the box that sent the Farnborough forward sprawling but he just made enough contact with the ball to avoid conceding a penalty. From the resulting corner a mix up in the Barnet defence gifted Farnborough a chance but when James was finally called into action, he blocked bravely at the feet of the forward. At the final whistle Barnet celebrated a hard fought victory that should really have been a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. Barnets victorious team were as follows... GK: James - Very quiet game for James, only called into action late on - blocking bravely at the feet of the onrushing forward. RB: Ross - Another solid performance. Forged an excellent partnership on the right with Tezla. LB: Squibbs - Won every challenge in the air and on the deck and almost scored twice with well struck shots. CB: Dan - Won every header as usual and looks to be forming a great platform at the back with Ollie. CB: Ollie - Commanding in the air and showed a new side to his game with some great runs from the back. RM: Tezla - Didn't quite get the goal his performance deserved but gave the Farnborough full back a torrid time. LM: Matt - Effective performance out on the left, linking up well with Squbbs and Dazza. CM: Dazza (C) - Involved in almost every Barnet attack and provided all three crosses for the Barnet goals. CM: Springer - Cows arse - Banjo. CF: Craig - So nearly grabbing a hat trick but popped up where it mattered most to put the Bees on their way. CF: Tony - Rare off day in front of goal but still got on the scoresheet and his pace caused endless problems. Subs: Pete -
Replaced Matt and worked well down the left flank. |
