Match Preview

We....lost? Yes we did and it was probably a fair result too although the whole game was spoilt by an inept referee who left a sour taste in the mouth. He was a disgrace but the team on the night were not good enough and deserved to lose anyway against a surprisingly good Exeter side. Hopefully, with a trip to struggling Tamworth we can put it right.

Tamworth are struggling in their first Conference season, with just two wins in their first thirteen they find themselves teetering on the edge of the relegation zone, one point above Leigh RMI. Their two wins have been very creditable if against two struggling sides, home to Dagenham and away to Halifax. Apart from that there has not been much joy for the Tamworth fans who enjoyed a comfortable Dr. Martens league win last season.

The statistics would suggest that an away win is on the cards but with performances like Tuesday's always possible, you can't be sure. Of course, this season needs to be put into perspective with last. We have 27 points after 13 games which is pretty excellent. We have a bunch of players who know when they have played badly and have the right attitude to get that game out of their systems and move on to the next tough task ahead.

With all due respect to our opponents, if we're serious about getting into the playoffs, these are the games where we really need to pick up points. It's all well and good beating Shrewsbury, Morecambe, Stevenage and Aldershot, but if we can't pick up points against the lesser sides then they become worthless.

In a perfect world, Tamworth would give up and wait for the goals to go past them, but it isn't going to happen, they'll get stuck in and make it hard for us and if we play like we did on Tuesday we'll get beaten. Martin Allen and the boys know what they have to do.

It was some season for Tamworth in 2002/2003. FA Trophy Finalists (having beaten four Conference sides on the way) and Dr. Martens Champions by the proverbial country mile, thirteen points in front of closest challengers Stafford Rangers.

After getting surprisingly beaten by Unibond Premier League side Burscough in the FA Trophy Final at Villa Park, Tamworth were getting ready for life in the Conference and I believed that they would do well for themselves and a top half finish was in store. How wrong I was. The season started with a 3-1 defeat to current leaders Hereford and its been pretty much downhill since and they have only picked up eleven points from thirteen games. If you look at the table though, it would only take two more wins to get them out of trouble for now but that is easier said than done.

They boast crowds of just over 1,000. The first day attendance of 2,250 against Hereford has pushed the average to 1,300 and with a sizeable Barnet following expected, could be a realistic attendance figure. Although the presence of the England v. Turkey match almost straight afterwards, that figure could be hit hard. Personally, I'd rather see Barnet take three points than England get to Euro 2004, but that's irrelevant.

Tamworth are one of the dirtiest teams in the league, discipline wise that is! Twenty four yellow cards and staggering five red cards already this season which has arguably dented their form so far. Their top scorer is winger Mark Cooper who has four goals to his name. It will be interesting to see whether Simon King can deal with him better than the the tricky Jamie Coppinger on Tuesday night.
