FA Cup First Round By Callum Williams A HIGHLY-DUBIOUS second-half penalty meant the Bees will need to travel to Stalybridge for an FA Cup first round replay next week. Barnet seemed to be cruising to victory when they established a 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes of Saturday's tie with their Unibond League opponents at Underhill, but their grip on victory was loosened by a goal on the stroke of half-time and plucked away by the controversial spot-kick 13 minutes from time. The Bees got off to the perfect start when Ismail Yakubu worked his way down the left wing and provided a cross for Joe Gamble to slam the ball into the top of the net after three minutes. This could - and maybe should - have paved the way for an avalanche of goals, but the visitors defended determinedly and kept the Bees' attack at bay until the 30th minute when another Yakubu cross fell kindly for the unmarked Peter Beadle, whose well-placed shot entered the net off the left-hand post. Yakubu was then just off target with a header and skipper Ian Hendon saw his cleverly worked free-kick saved by Stalybridge keeper Craig Dootson. Barnet paid the penalty when a swift Stalybridge counter-attack caught the home defence napping and Barry Keelings lashed home from the edge of the area to make the score 2-1. Second Half The second half followed the pattern of the first with Stalybridge defending stoutly and trying to catch Barnet on the break. There were several scrambles in the Stalybridge goalmouth and, during one, Barnet's leading scorer Guiliano Grazioli saw his effort hooked off the line by Keelings. The game, which had several controversial moments, took another twist after 77 minutes when Stalybridge were awarded a penalty, seemingly for holding against a totally bemused Danny Maddix. When the fuss died down, Phil Eastwood coolly converted the spot-kick with only Stalybridge's second shot on goal. Stalybridge defended bravely for the remaining minutes and, in the end, were happy to take Barnet back to the North West for a replay on Tuesday, November 18 when the prize for the winners will be a second round tie away to reigning Conference champions Yeovil. Whatever the result of the replay, Barnet will view as an unwanted fixture after a match they should have sewn up at the first time of asking.
