Barnet started the season with a
brilliant 2-0 victory at home to Telford on
Saturday which leaves us in 2nd place. A
fantastic second half performance especially saw
us take a deserved victory with goals from Ben
Strevens and Ian Hendon (although it was given as
an own goal, it WASN'T).
Farnborough
however had a lovely journey to Scarborough on a
hot sunny day - doesn't it make you jealous when
you consider that we have to go there on a
November Tuesday night!! Anyway, they
unfortunately lost 2-1 to an 89th minute penalty
having equalised through Ken Charlery on 83. The
result leaves them in 18th place after the first
round of matches.
I
would imagine that Barnet will keep the same
line-up from Saturday having picked up no
injuries and should have rested from the
exhaustion of the sweltering heat. I'd imagine a
large-ish crowd by Farnborough's standards with a
large Barnet following to swell the numbers.
Thankfully,
I'll be without crutches for this years' trip but
even with them last year I still managed to go
mad having won a tenner on the BFCSA players draw
thanks to Ismail Yakubu's stupendous (thesaurus'
are great eh?) goal from the edge of the box. It
was some way to open up his account in a Barnet
shirt but unfortunately he won't be repeating the
feat as he will be out injured for the next week
or two.
Two
seasons ago, newly relegated Barnet faced newly
promoted Farnborough on August Bank Holiday
Monday with Farnborough winning 2-1 with a 90th
minute goal. At Underhill, Farnborough took apart
a Barnet side with a huge lack of confidence
having lost five in a row and the 3-0 defeat in
front of just 787. The result saw that John Still
resigned and Shreeves and Allen took over.
In
02/03, Farnborough again stole victory with a
90th minute goal, 2-1 at Underhill in a game
ridden with controversy and the particularly poor
performance of referee, Mr. A. Conn. Back at
Cherrywood Road, the heart of the Farnborough
squad had been ripped out and taken to Stevenage
but they still managed to lead twice on way to a
2-2 draw, Craig Pope saved Barnet's blushes with
his first goal of his Barnet career with a near
post header 5 minutes from time.
This
year, Farnborough have made up their squad
largely from trialists and lower leagues but one
player who has apparently looked outstanding for
them is Ali Chaaban who Farnborough fans have
been giving rave reviews. Of course, Tony Taggart
was signed from Farnborough on a free in the
summer and was then considered to be one of
Farnborough's better players and has showed some
real potential since joining. Whether Barnet can
turn potential into points remains to be seen,
but I certainly believe we can do it very
efficiently to see us right up there come what
May.
