Match Preview

With over a quarter of the season gone, The Bees are sitting pretty at the right end of the table. Hopefully Saturday's 2-1 win over Morecambe has dispelled belief among opposing fans that we are a one man team as top scorer Guiliano Grazioli was absent with the flu and probably will be for this clash of two ex-league sides.

Exeter also have their own prolific goalscorer and he goes by the name of Sean Devine. A Barnet legend by all accounts and in the early stages of the 96/97 season got a hat-trick against The Grecians. On Friday he grabbed another three to his tally at Eton Park in a spectacular 4-3 win. Exeter themselves have had a pretty solid start since dropping on the last day of the season and have lost only one of their last seven. They are unbeaten at home in six games although four have been draws and have won three, lost three at home.

As with Shrewsbury, their average attendance has not been affected that much and have regularly boasted crowds of over 3,000 and have an impressive away support too. With that in mind a 2000+ attendance isn't unrealistic, although should their be football on the telly, it could be cut drastically. It was encouraging though to see that 1,673 of the 1,776 attendance on Saturday were Barnet fans and you'd hope that with the continuing success of the team the average will continue to edge up.

Barnet go into this game as firm favourites, but we know that no-one can be taken for granted. We have played six of the top ten and have beaten four of them within the last three weeks and Exeter will bring another tough test to the new Barnet line-up. Les Afful and Sean Devine are both players we are going to have to look out for, we know all about Devine but young Afful is very much an unknown package but has been getting rave reviews from Exeter fans.

Another tough task is in store.

As mentioned above, Exeter haven't been doing too badly this season but of course have a massive black cloud hanging over them, and I don't mean the rain we've been having recently. The administrators look as if they're on their way in and that would mean a 12 point deduction from their total, which at the moment would leave them with 7 points and 20th place.

Some people predicted a torrid time for The Grecians in their first Conference season, but they haven't done too badly for themselves, just hanging three points off the playoff places and eight points behind ourselves. All of their defeats this season have come away from home where they have picked up half of the eighteen points available. In fact, their last two away wins have produced no less than fourteen goals, 5-2 at Forest Green and the 4-3 win at Burton Albion on Friday night.

They currently have an average attendance of just over 3,000 (3,093) so a very good Tuesday night away following should be in order and will push up our attendances which are growing all the time. It is good to see that a team can sustain good attendances even after the dreaded drop from Division Three, unlike ourselves.....

An underrated side it would seem and will be looking to push themselves right into the playoff pack.
