  The Season So Far

In a well publicised move from Farnborough, Graham Westley has recently taken over as the Manager of Stevenage. The Ex-Chairman/Manager has dubiously taken seven players with him, leaving a rather depleated Farnborough side. Things don't seem to be getting much better on the pitch though. Their last away win was way back on the 28th September, the 5-1 mauling of Woking. They have drawn a couple of games lately though. 1-1 at Northwich and a 2-2 v Hereford a couple of weeks ago.

Tuesday night saw the 'Boro' lose 2-3 away to Dagenham & Redbridge - Shame.

On to Barnet, after the 'Day of the Jekyll' performance against Scarborough in our last home match 'Mr Hyde' was trying to force his way back into the Barnet side down at a rather wet Farnborough on saturday. Luckily the young Lads Yakubu and Pope saved the day, although Pope missed out of seeing his name splashed all over the papers the next day when the scorer was put down as Ben Wiper (Ed - and this site. Still haven't worked out what I'm going to do about that...)

The Non League Paper's headline read 'Boro left with only regrets as Ben wipes out two points.'

It should have read 'Boro left with only regrets as Craig pop(e)s it in the net.' (sorry for that!)

Knowing Barnets luck and the way we play could this be Stevenage's day? They'll be keen to reverse the score from earlier in the season and if they don't win the fans will be wondering why Graham Westley was brought in. Surely it wasn't for his money was it?

Phil Wallace has already denied he's selling the club!

Incidently, The Who recorded a song called Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde back in the sixties, (long before Pete Townshend bought a computer!). Actually John Entwistle wrote this one. Maybe it could be played as the team run out. It would be more suitable than the Fatboy Slim track that was played last time!!

History

The current Stevenage team was founded in 1976 after Stevenage Athletic folded. They played in the Chiltern Youth League, followed by the Wallspan Combination League.

In 1980 they moved to Broadhall Way, owned by the Borough Council, adopting the 'Borough' in their name. They also joined the United Counties League this year, then in 1983 moved across to the Servowarm Isthmian league Div.2 North which they won. They also lost theHerts Senior Cup Final to Barnet 0-4.

They were relegated back to Division 2 North in 1986/87season, but with Paul Fairclough coming in as Manager in 1990/91, they won the League with an impressive 107 points, scoring 122 goals.

With the league now re-named the Diadora they won Division 1 in 1991/92 and finished seventh in the Premier the following season.

1993/94 saw promotion again , this time to the Conference, finishing fifth in their first year.

In their second year in the Conference they won the title, but promotion was not to be as their ground was not up to League standard, although ironically it was by the start of the season.

A certain team named Torquay were saved from the 'dreaded drop'.

The next season saw them finish third and reached the 3rd round of the FA Cup, losing 0-2 away to Birmingham City.

Another great cup run next season saw them up against Newcastle United at Home. After a 1-1- draw they lost the replay 1-2 away.

With a certain Victor Green as Chairman, Paul Fairclough lost his job, followed by several successors, but returned when the coast was clear in the summer of 2000 with Phil Wallace coming in as Chairman.

Fairclough was replcaed by Wayne Turner assisted by Gary Phillips, but recently Graham Westley has taken over the reigns in a very controversial move from Farnborough.
