  The Season So Far

Scarborough didn't win until their seventh game of the season, 4-1 against Kettering at home, but since then have gradually climbed the table.

They are obviously a very defensive side away having drawn seven (five of those 1-1), but have only won three. The goals tally of fifteen for and sixteen against backs this theory up. In fact they have only let in more than one goal away on three occasions. The major blip being the 5 against at Gravesend & Northfleet.

At home they are more succesful, leaving the in eighth position, but their current form has let them down of late with four straight defeats since the 4-1 win at home to Burton.

They were uncerimoniously dumped out of the FA Trophy on Monday evening, losing 2-1 against last year's Conference relegated's Dover. They were 1-0 until the 88th minute when a last minute equaliser forced the game into extra-time. Dover won a penalty, which they converted and held onto the lead.

Had Scarborough won, Saturday's game would have been postponed to make way for the next round of the Trophy, so expect a few disgruntled seadogs at Underhill on Saturday.

Now to Barnet! Even Peter Shreeves is quoting the often used 'Jekyll & Hyde' statement about Barnet's up and down season. This very worrying trend is having a drastic effect on attendances at Underhill and the graph is starting to look like something Eddie 'the eagle' Edwards would ski-jump down!

The defeat against Margate has really put paid to any real chance of making the play-offs, so it looks like a mid-table finish for the Bees this term with around 53 points.

I don't really see why a team like Barnet can't get it together on the pitch, especially with one of the most experienced Managers in the Conference.

If I knew the answers to Barnet's problems though, I wouldn't be sitting here writing this.

I'm hoping that I will be proved wrong and 'the lads' will come out on Saturday, play the game of their lives and show us and the stay-away fans what they really can do - leading onto a play-off place.

History

Scarborough FC was founded in 1879 by members of the Cricket Club and played it's matches at the North Marine Cricket ground. In 1887 they moved next door to a site called the recreation Ground.

In the 1898/99 season they joined the Northern League Division 2 where they ended the first season 8th out of ten.

They moved again to land owned by the local corporation in Seamer Road, with work starting on the ground in 1898.

In February 1926 the club were fined £25.00 by the FA for making illegal payments to players. The commitee was also banned for three years. The new commitee decided to go professional and they joined the Yorkshire League playing their first match in August 1926.

After the War they played in the Scarborough and District league, then joined the Midland League the next season.

They played in the Northern Premier League from 69 to 79 coming forth in the 69/70 season, only two points off the winners. They also won the FA Trophy in 72/73, 75/76 and 76/77.

Scarborough went on to play in the Conference and were the fisrt team to win automatic promotion in 1986/87, with Barnet finishing a close second.

Their stay in the Football League was not to be a long one and in 1999 they were relegated back to the Conference, thier highest ever finish being 5th in Division 4 in 1988/89.

Back in the Conference they've finished 4th,10th, then 12th last season. With things the way they are at the moment it shows how quickly a team can plummet once league status has been lost!
