  The Season So Far

Burton are finding it a bit tougher in the Conference this season than they did last term in the Unibond. After going a whole season without a defeat at home they have only notched up two this time around, 2-0 against Hereford and 1-0 over Nuneaton Borough. Away though is a completly different matter. Seven wins on their travels and two draws sees them as a hard team to beat although they lost their last fixture away 1-4 at Scarborough.

Last Saturday saw them go dowm 0-1 at home to the lowly Leigh RMI so I should imagine they will be coming out all guns blazing at Underhill to avenge the 3-0 trouncing we gave them in front of the Sky cameras way back on the August Bank holiday.

What can I say about the Bees? After a very diasppointing defeat at Forest Green in the FA Trophy they go up to high flying Chester and pull of a very commendable 1-1 draw. The Lads have got to stop this Jekyll and Hyde performance starting on Saturday if we're going to have anything to show at all for this season. We can still make the play-offs, but it's going to take a lot of hard work.

So lets get behind the team and "Sing you heart out for the lads".

If They're Picked..

I don't know if this will be worth the hassle (the words "barrel" and "scraping" come to mind ;-) but below is a list of players who - IF THEY'RE PICKED - will be starting an anniversary game. In other words, it will be their nth start where n is divisible by 10. This takes no accout of whether they are likely to be picked.

History

Founded in 1950 restoring senior football to a town, which had once boasted two football league clubs, the "Brewers" quickly established themselves in Non-League football, transferring from the Birmingham League to the Southern League in 1958, the same year they moved from their original home in Wellington Street to their current ground, Eton Park.

The club won the Southern League Cup in 1965. The following year they were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division, then probably the top league outside the football league, but the 60's and 70's were up and down years, as the club were relegated numerous times, invariably to bounce back almost instantly.

With the onset of the 1980's, re-organization of the leagues saw Albion move into the Northern Premier League, where the club enjoyed the most successful era in its history - most notably in Cup competitions. In 1985 the Brewers reached the Third Round of the FA Cup, for the second time (the first was against Charlton Athletic in 1956), where they were beaten 6-1 by Leicester City and a Gary Lineker hat-trick. But the match, played in front of 22,500 at the Baseball Ground, Derby, was disrupted by crowd trouble, and the FA ordered a behind-closed-doors replay. This time they lost by a single goal. Manager of this era Neil Warnock went on to take Scarborough into the Football League, and then enjoyed success at a number of football league clubs.

Two years later the club reached Wembley for the first time in its history, in the FA Trophy final. A 0-0 draw with Conference side Kidderminster Harriers was followed by a thrilling replay at The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, in front of the ground's biggest crowd of the season - 15,685. The Brewers were unlucky to go down 2-1, midfielder Paul Bancroft missing a last gasp penalty.

Since then, a succession of managers have passed through the portals of Eton Park, never managing to quite fulfill the potential shown in the mid to late eighties. After Wembley, the club transferred back to the Southern League Premier Division (now the Dr. Martens League) where they have remained ever since, their highest position being third in 1994-95, under former manager John Barton. Barton also brought the first silverware in over a decade to Eton Park - the Southern League Cup and the Birmingham Senior Cup both being won in 1997, but parted company with the club in September 1998.

His departure opened the door for the arrival of the most famous manager in the club's history - Nigel Clough - son of the legendary Brian Clough, who took his first steps on the road to emulating his father's career, as player boss at Eton Park, along with former Nottingham Forest team-mate Gary Crosby as his assistant. Gradually success began to come Burton’s way with a couple of minor cup competition wins under their belt.
The Championship and promotion to the Conference was always the priority though and following two seasons as runners up in the Dr. Martens Premier League, Burton enjoyed the most successful campaign in their history as they took the Unibond Premier League by storm, Burton hit top spot in September and were never moved, finally taking the title at Vauxhall Motors in April with a stunning 4-1 away victory that summed up their incredible season. In the process, they gained a record points total for the Unibond Premier League and scored over one hundred goals to give their supporters a season to remember.
