Programme Notes

Burton Albion, 25 January 2003
(or 2002 according to the programme, Kevin ;-)

Good afternoon and welcome to the BFCSA page.

It was a big disappointment to have the Forest Green Rovers game called off. Over twenty people had volunteered for the fans match on the Astroturf pitch before the game and were all looking forward to showing off their ball skills.

I'd just like to thank everyone who showed an interest in playing, Bill Cresswell for organizing it all with Forest Green, Robert Whipple for rounding up part of the team on the Coach and Janet Matthewson for sorting out the kit.

Hopefully we'll be able to arrange this for next season, so when the fixtures are announced lets hope it's in early autumn!

My love for Barnet started in 1990 and my obsession with the club has grown ever since. I must however thank my family for starting this because without them and their support for the club I probably wouldn't know Barnet exist now.

For me it has been 13 years of joy and sadness starting with promotion in my first season and ending in.... well we all know what happened two years ago. Without Barnet football club my weekends would have been very uneventful and I live for Saturday's and those 3.00pm kick-offs.

I will never forget that opening day at Maccelsfield in the sweltering heat and a six-goal thriller, which led to a 3-3 draw. For me that season was fantastic and apart from that heady day in the Surrey Docks I will never forget putting one over those hated Cobblers, where Paul Showlers goal direct from the corner booked us a tie with Portsmouth.

One other game that really sticks out as well was our game away at Yeovil where 'Don't Flinch' Tony Lynch grabbed the matchball in a superb performance.

Obviously the Conference winning season has to rank amongst the best but our first season in the football league was heaven only to lose out in the Play-offs to Blackpool and over both legs we really were the better side and in my opinion very hard done by.

One of my most embarrassing moments of that season was having a rather dodgy picture of myself in the Maidstone programme, a match in which I was mascot.

My dream was however fulfilled the following season, where despite a 2-0 loss at Scunthorpe we were promoted to Division Two, however the departure of Barry Fry and the start of our financial problems took some of the joy out of it.

The 1993-94 season saw us relegated but it did see us almost beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and if only Kelly Haag had got a stud to Geoff Cooper's last minute cross we would have been in ecstasy.

However, for me that season was a very bitter pill to swallow as I really thought that if we had the team of the previous year we could have advanced up the pyramid. Anyway it wasn't to be and we remained in Division Three for the rest of our league history.

There was of course those nail biting Play-off games with Colchester and Peterborough that stick out but basically every season that I have followed Barnet has produced joy and heartache.

On a rather bizarre note, one moment I will remember forever was that stunning 40-yard strike by Carl Hoddle at Crawly in the FA Cup. That goal sparked outrageous celebrations amongst the Barnet faithful and excuse me for mentioning this Tank but yes, you broke Crawly's wall.

Looking at the present day, we find ourselves in rather a precarious position and as I'm sure you feel the same, is a worrying period for Barnet Football Club.

I cannot emphasize the importance that we pull together and get behind the lads and management team who are running at tight ship and yes at the moment results aren't what they could be but things go in cycles.

Lets get behind the club we all love and push it forwards, back towards the Football League.

Come on you Bees.
