Tiverton
Town 26 October
Good afternoon and
welcome to the BFCSA page.
MEET THE COMMITTEE
Today I'd like to introduce the
longest serving member on the Committee, David Stokes. As
you will see David has served the Association and the
Club well over the years and can still be found selling
programmes before each match at the top of the East
Terrace. Thanks David, keep up the good work.

It was a late neighbour
of mine, a keen Barnet supporter who suggested to me that
Underhill was a good place to spend Saturday afternoons.
In fact my first visit was not so much to see Barnet but
the opposition, Bishop Auckland, who were one of the
biggest names in amateur football at that time. Barnet
won and I became hooked. I started attending all the home
games and then after a while I began travelling to away
matches, my first one being a London Senior Cup replay at
Tooting & Mitchum.
One Saturday whilst
travelling to Cambridge City the late George Sturman, who
was on the Supporters Association Committee, asked me if
I would be interested in joining the Committee which I
agreed to do. During my time on the Committee I have held
the positions of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Back
in the Football Clubs Southern League days they relied
very much on the Supporters Association for assistance on
match days and for many years I operated a turnstile as
well as helping out in the tea bar.
On Sunday mornings after
a game I would help sweep the terraces and during the
close season would assist with painting the stands and
crash barriers and any other jobs that needed doing. For
a number of years I ran the transport to away matches
before handing over to Steve and Ann Percy.
I've no idea how many
matches I have attended but it must be close to 2000 and
over the years I would say there have been more good
seasons than bad ones. My dream was always to see Barnet
win at Wembley but obviously that will never be, although
I was there when they lost to Crook Town in the Amateur
Cup final and again when they lost to Stafford Rangers in
the final of the Challenge Trophy.
Apart from Barnet my
other team who I have supported about as long as Barnet
is Spurs. Unlike Barnet I have seen them win two FA Cup
finals and a League Cup final, as well as being at White
Hart Lane the night they won the First Division
championship in 1961. My other interests outside football
are cricket (being a member of Middlesex County Cricket
Club, who I have supported since 1960) and gardening.
